Touching Jesus!

Often when we read scripture we rush past some very important parts. They at first seem insignificant and obvious. After some meditation along with the Spirit of Truth leading the way, what was once trivial becomes monumental.

I am talking about touching Jesus.

There is a story in Luke chapter 8 of a woman who had spent all of her money to stop an issue of blood that she had for years. This issue of blood continually flowing from her made her unclean and she could not participate in anything religious because she was unclean.

I often wonder if she thought God had rejected her. The bible often talks of God opening the wombs of women. If God can open and close wombs, certainly He could stop the unnatural flow of blood. What could have possibly been going through her mind?

After she spent all of her money, she decided to give this God of scripture a try. A lot of people said she was operating out of superstitious unscriptural faith. Not really, she knew that Jesus was the Messiah, and that He had healing flowing out of the borders of His garment (Mal 4:2).

Mal 4:2 But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.

In the original Hebrew, ‘wings’ can also understood to be the border of His garment. She knew this. She knew that if she could somehow fight through the crowd amongst everyone else and just touch the border of His garment that she would be healed. Because she also knew that God’s Word will not return to Him void.

Isa 55:11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

I can just imagine her desperately fighting to get close to Jesus all the while trying to remain unseen because she was unclean. Technically, the simple act of her touching Him would make Him be unclean according to Mosaic law (Leviticus 15:19-28).

When she finally gets to Him and touches not His physical body but the hem of His garment, Jesus says “Who touched Me?”. Scripture doesn’t say that she touched Him directly, but the border of His garment. The disciples don’t get what is going on and they tell Jesus that everyone is touching Him.

But no, there was only one woman that touched him out of the multitudes thronging Him.

What did Jesus mean by “who touched Me?” Later we see that virtue had gone out of Him. So we can conclude that the multitudes thronging Him weren’t touching Him in the same manner as this woman with the issue of blood. Because virtue had went out of Him!

There are some key ingredients to this story.

First is that this woman had come to the end of all of her fleshly attempts at getting well. Her only hope was God. Money couldn’t save her. Doctors couldn’t save her. Dr. Phil couldn’t save her. Only God could save her.

Second, she was desperate enough to do something about it. She probably had some faith rolling around in her soul but wasn’t willing to give it a try until she saw that she had no earthly hope. This issue of blood would keep her from getting married, it would keep her from all of the ceremonies, it would keep her from everything. She might as well have been a leper. If she didn’t do something, then she would remain that way until the day she died. Unclean.

Thirdly, she had unshakable faith. Faith is believing what God’s word says enough to risk everything to come into agreement with it. It means risking your pride, your reputation, your money, your health, and even your life. Having faith in God is like burning the bridge behind you and only going with God, even if it kills you.

Are you at the point where you need to touch Jesus? A lot can be learned from a woman in Luke chapter 8. Read it and ask the Spirit of Truth to guide you into all truth.

Heb 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
